Katahdin Area Cub Scouts competed in the Pinewood Derby District Championship on March 28 at the Airport Mall, sponsored by Tire Warehouse. The three boys with the fastest cars from each pack in Hancock, NorthStar, Penquis, Penobscot Valley, Waldo, and Washington districts raced and "did their best" in hopes of earning the top spot in the Katahdin Area Council. Winning first place for the Penobscot Valley District was Wolf Scout Kent Raymond of Pack 25 in Hermon, son of Brian and Kendra Raymond. The Penobscot Valley District includes 22 packs and encompasses Penobscot County. The fastest racer in each of the districts advanced to compete in the Katahdin Area Council race later in the day. Kent earned a second place finish in that final race. The Pinewood Derby is a long-time tradition in Cub Scouting, where boys design, build, decorate, and fine tune cars with the goal of producing the fastest times, working with a parent, and of course, having fun.
